Phymata goes cuckoo - Phymata pennsylvanica

Phymata goes cuckoo - Phymata pennsylvanica
West Greenwich, Arcadia Management Area, Breakheart Pond, Kent County, Rhode Island, USA
July 31, 2010
Size: 7mm
There was a mixed population of Eupatorium (Joe-Pye Weed) species near this pond.
Ants were farming something on all the purple flowering species with glabrous stems, but
not on the white flowered E. perfoliatum because of its hirsute stems. So I checked,
and sure enough, amubush bugs & crab spiders were only on the inflorescences of ant-free plants. Neat.

I guess curling up didn't do much for the Cuckoo.
