orb spider cf Neoscona crucifera - Araneus cavaticus
Thornton, Grafton County, New Hampshire, USA
June 26, 2010
Size: body +/- 20 mm
I have had a neighborhood of these guys under the eaves by my deck for years. They are fat and happy as I put out lights for moths here, too. Can someone firm up my ID? I don't realy see a cross on the back - as I do in some of your pix. And the underside looks a bit different, too, though I don't know enough to know what might be natural variation. Thanks in advance.

John, what do you think of Barn Spider (Araneus cavaticus)?

Yes, good call,
Perfect match to Levi's figure and description. Guess I wasn't thinking hard enough. I'll move it.

Araneus cavaticus
Thanks, all. I had come around to this, too. But had not gotten around to querying it. I'm a complete arachnid amateur, but have enjoyed these guys all summer.

We would say this is instead in the genus Araneus
We don't know which one yet, but we are currently working with Lynette on the orb weavers so may have this figured out soon.
