On Feb. 25, 2006 I picked through the chunks of larvae-filled shelf fungus I had been saving since Jan. 13, 2006 when I collected them. I picked out all the pupae I could find, as well as some larvae that had not shed their final larva skin but were already exhibiting the classic abdominal gyrating motions of a pupa. I'm sure I missed some. My objective is to be able to tell with a glance when they are emerging. I'd like to get some newly-emerged shots.

In this image you can see both pupae as well as pre-pupal larvae. The image can be enlarged for closer inspection by editors. Notice the difference in tail spines or hooks between pupae and pre-pupal larvae. Some of the pupae have fairly well-developed eyes. I'm guessing these will be first to emerge as adults.
