bright red bug found in NJ forest - Dasymutilla occidentalis - Female
winslow, atlantic county, new jersey County, New Jersey, USA
August 2, 2010
Size: about half an inch long
my buddy and i were going to check out a local body of water known as the "blue hole" in southern new jersey in a town called winslow

this is located in a typical NJ forest and we happened to noticed this lil guy skittering around on the ground right out in the open..he seemed to be looking for smaller bugs to eat but my friend and i werent sure

found this guy in the mid afternoon hours around 3 o clock id guess

was about a half an inch long, maybe a bit less, and didnt seem to worry much about hiding though it certainly ran from us as i was trying to snap a picture...also definitely seemed to be covered with some fine red hairs
