Unknown 'beetle' - Chrysochus auratus

Unknown 'beetle' - Chrysochus auratus
Rattlesnake Springs, Eddy County, New Mexico, USA
August 1, 2010
With my limited knowledge I would guess this is a beetle of some sort. We were at the spring photographing dragons and there was a good number of these flying around. Heavy swamp type of vegetation with mature cottonwoods. And, as the location name implies, lots of water in a very arid environment.
