Well, it's a chrysalis -
the pupa of a butterfly, not a moth cocoon. That narrows it down a little, and the silken girdle around the middle probably narrows it down a little more. Swallowtails do this, but so do some others e.g. sulphurs. Size would also be helpful for ID.
A quick browse through the images here led me to this very similar cabbage white (below) - I think this might be the same one.

Thanks for your help. It looks similar to the Cabbage White chrysalis, but I'm not sure if it's the same thing. This particular chrysalis measured 1 & 3/4 cms. Thanks again.
