combative spider - Bothriocyrtum californicum - Male
Spring Valley, San Diego County, California, USA
February 28, 2006
After hearing our dog fighting with something in our back yard it brought this spider in from outside on a rainy night. It was still rearing up and protecting itself even after my dog injured it's leg. We live next to a large hillside that is also home to an abundance of rattle snakes, and other wild animals. We have never seen a spider like this in the 20 years we've lived here.
