Hornet Mimic Syrphid? - Temnostoma excentrica

Hornet Mimic Syrphid? - Temnostoma excentrica
Apache National Forest, Apache County, Arizona, USA
August 3, 2010
This fly was pretty large, bigger than a yellow jacket (there were many yellow jackets around), maybe queen-size yellow jacket. This is the only image.

On False Hellebore (Veratrum californicum).

Temnostoma excentrica
Nice find! This genus is rarely seen out west. From its size and yellow pollinose banding there are two possible species this could be T. alternans and T. excentrica. While most of the usual characters to distingush these species cannot be seen in this photograph. I can make out that the pollinose fasciae anterior to the transverse suture is unbroken. This means that this species is T. excentrica.

For future reference when taking pictures of Temnostoma it is most helpful for identification to get a dorsal (above) photo of the specimen.

Thank You, Moved
Ooo, good call, thanks Ron. Moved from ID Request.

Looks like Temnostoma alternans

but there may be other candidates, plus I'm not sure range is right. Please move your post to Flies (Diptera) for expert review.
