Unknown Crane Fly - Bittacus occidentis

Unknown Crane Fly - Bittacus occidentis
Lizard Creek Wildlife Area, Webster County, Iowa, USA
July 17, 2010
Size: about 2 cm long

Moved very tentatively
Mark-- this may be a very nice find, so please keep an eye out for them and try to take more pix next year -- and thanks for sharing. =v=

Moved from Bittacus.

ID difficult
It's hard to tell, but this could be the elusive occidentis. The hind femora are swollen, as in that species. But it is impossible to see the wing necessary veins to confirm. The muted emargination on the veins also suggests occidentis.

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

Perhaps it's a Hangingfly
Take a look at Bittacidae - Hangingflies.

yes, a Bittacus
