Ponderous Borer? - Trichocnemis spiculatus

Ponderous Borer? - Trichocnemis spiculatus
Battle Ground, Clark County, Washington, USA
August 10, 2010
Size: 3 inches
This dude has been hanging out on my front porch for three days now. Is it a Ponderous Borer? Whatever it is, it's the biggest herkin' beetle I've ever seen in the wild, and I've lived in the Pacific NW all my life. It's kind of fuzzy on its lower side as well, with a soft yellowish fuzzy coating. That's an adult female human's finger for comparison.

Probably so
Also called by some the Timberworm Longhorn Beetle - Ergates spiculatus

Yes...
The slicing jaws of the larvae are said to have inspired the design of the chain saw.

Ponderous Borer Larvae
A couple of years ago I saw the BIGGEST larvae/maggot at the Christmas Tree farm. It was bigger than my thumb. I'm now wondering if that might have been the larvae of this same kind of critter. Wish I had taken a picture of it, but at the time it was just kind of a shocker.
