Lady Beetle - Hippodamia sinuata

Lady Beetle - Hippodamia sinuata
In Westwood - elevation 5100ft, Lassen County, California, USA
July 8, 2008
Size: Body length 6mm
I get a variety of Lady Beetles in my yard - mostly H. convergens which vary quite a bit in the number of spots on the elytra. But this specimen does not seem to quite match; the white marks on the thorax appears the same, but the pattern of the black spots/marks on the elytra just seems a bit too different. H. sinuata might be a possibility - but I am not sure about this either. Comments and/or help in species ID appreciated - thanks!

sinuata
That's a nice catch. I recently discovered that sinuata can take many forms, including the bottom spots froming parenthesis like the parenthesis ladybug. T striped Protonotum differentiates the two species. See also Ladybug Pictures for examples.

Moved
Moved from Hippodamia.

yes, Hippodamia sinuata
Nice find! Hippodamia sinuata isn't the only Hippodamia species with elytra like this, but the others don't have the convergent markings on the pronotum.

Based on your location, it's even possible to ID the subspecies: this is H. sinuata crotchi.

Thank you Abigail!
Even to the subspecies - kool!
