Hairy Yellow-Marked Buprestid - Acmaeodera pulchella

Hairy Yellow-Marked Buprestid - Acmaeodera pulchella
Juno Beach, Florida, USA
June 25, 2004
This photo was taken at the Juno Dunes Natural Area.

This beetle's markings are very similar to Patrick's image of a Hairy Yellow-Marked Buprestid, but I'm not positive:

looks good, comments on id's of Buprestids
The "Hairy Yellow-marked Buprestid", Acmaeodera pulchella, is illustrated in couple of guides and is supposed to be a widespread species, common on flowers. Larvae bore into a variety of trees, including pines, and especially, Baldcypress, which I think are found inland in numbers near Jupiter.

The markings are supposed to be variable, if I recall correctly from the references. The hairy body, visible in both our photographs, is described in the references I consulted. (I think it was Swan and Papp, and also Dillon and Dillon.) I'm not sure anybody will get much farther than this (very plausible) identification without getting specimens and going to a museum.

Cypress...
Thanks for the info Patrick,

Yes, there are a variety of pines down here as well as Bald Cypress. If the markings vary, then I think we know for sure what it is.

I think it's important to note the variation in patterning. I know this appears on other insect species as well.
