Hydrochus sp. - Hydrochus

Hydrochus sp. - Hydrochus
George Bagby State Park, Clay County, Georgia, USA
May 7, 2010
Size: 2.8mm
Light trap at perimeter of Lodge parking lot. Rescued this little guy from a 9-10mm
Carabid (that escaped), but not before it lost both antennae. Genus det. B. Maithson,
2010. Ran it through the key (1) and narrowed it down to either H. rufipes or
H. inaequalis, based on size, round submentum fovea and general impressions of elytral
intervals. Personally I am going w/H. rufipes as my guess. Comments corrections welcome.

Not sure whether a species ID is possible with external characters alone- most require male dissection.
