Aliens are here! Afraid to touch it. Found in back yard. What is it? Puts his head down when threatened to expose branch looking tentacles.

I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. Saddleback is confirmed what stung her. She saw the picture. And I definitely have a hickory horned devil.

a.k.a "Hickory Horned Devil", these caterpillars are wicked looking, but harmless. They pupate underground and can take up to 2 years to become a moth.

Thanks
Hoping for aliens and got a moth. This is a great site. Stumbled on it to see if this caterpillar stung. Mother in-law got stung by a horse saddle (I think). Now she is weary of anything strange.

The caterpillar shown in the original photo is much larger and does not have the green and brown. It will turn green with large orange "horns" in later instars. The Saddleback is smaller and venomous.

right..
they were thinking your mom got stung by a saddleback, which this is a pic of. this is def not a hickory horned devil..as it stings. do you know how to work this guide? you can click on a picture then choose images to see the creature in all stages of development..for one thing, or click on caterpillers and hunt down what it is you want to name.
