Horntail? Wasp from firewood - Xiphydria maculata - Female
Finland, Lake County, Minnesota, USA
March 4, 2006
Size: about 24mm

Xiphydria sp. (Xiphydriidae)
Athough related to true Horntails, these insects are put in a separate family. Shape of head and pronotum is especially different, giving a typical "neck". Females too lack the additionnal "horn" on their abdomen's apex, having only their robust, but short, ovipositor.
