Mating Robberflies - Laphria affinis

Mating Robberflies - Laphria affinis
Angelina National Forest, Angelina County, Texas, USA
December 8, 2009
Robberflies mating a few days before record cold in East Texas. Photographed on the windshield of our field truck. Any ideas what kind of robberfly?

Well
This is east Texas and the right spot for the first Laphria affinus in TX which is likely the only species to be flying in December. This is the state record for that species.

Very Cool!
I assume you are sure of the ID, so I'll move it to that species. A new state record overall, as in not just for bug guide?

The record
Was for the state (not just bugguide). Previously felt to be a rare robber. It just was not accessible during the usual colleciton times for most areas. This is a very late flying Laphria in the year. And can be fast and elusive. It likes pine forests. So likely will not be found in the vast rest of Texas.
