WOW !!!! That's a pretty cool find. This is a recently introduced species, Icosium tomentosum. It's from the Mediterranean region and feeds locally in the Orange County area on columnar Cypress. By chance was there any of that host plant around??
By any and all means possible ... COLLECT ANY OF THESE BUGS YOU FIND !!!
Any other info on this critter would be helpful.

Dang, I released it already
I don't think we have those columnar cypress trees at the Fullerton Arboretum, but they're fairly common "landscape trees" in the general area. This particular beetle was attracted to my sheet and black light that I had set up where the nearest trees were citrus, oaks and a huge ash tree.
I don't know how to change this page to include all the proper taxonomic stuff. I don't even know what all that "stuff" should say! (That's why I'm an
amateur
bug-ologist.) Would appreciate help with that. Thanks :)

Whew!
I'm glad it's introduced (well, not really). I was racking my brain over it but could just not identify it. Thanks, Ian.

Yeah, it's darn cool (as you
Yeah, it's darn cool (as you say, sort of). If I hadn't known about the introduction, I'd be totally clueless as well. My knowledge of obscure bycids from all over the world is slim at best.
