beetle fight - Thymalus marginicollis

beetle fight - Thymalus marginicollis
Hudson, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
March 8, 2006
Size: about 6.5 mm
I was amused to see some (probably) sibling rivalry in the container where I have these trogossitids emerging from their pupae. I had placed the container in my light arena for a photo session and this adult beetle sidled up to one of the pupae, no doubt seeking some relief from the glare. The pupa had other ideas, seemingly uncomfortable with the adult crowding it.

The pupa repeatedly whacked the adult on the head and pronotum with its gyrating abdomen, to which the adult responded by baring its mandibles as if to bite. It would not move out of the way, however, just like two squabbling kids.
