Green June Beetle - Cotinis nitida

Green June Beetle - Cotinis nitida
Mountville, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA
July 3, 2005
Size: 2cm
A specimen from my collection.

Plaything
My mom showed me many years ago how to tie a sewing thread onto a hind leg of one of these beetles and toss it into the air so it would fly. Then, by holding the other end of the thread, the beetle would fly in a circle around me. I'm sure the beetle was not quite so amused.

Neat!
I never tried that. I did hear about doing that with a fly, but even a small thread is too heavy.
