Apataniidae? - Chimarra

Apataniidae? - Chimarra
East Greenwich, Kent County, Rhode Island, USA
August 19, 2010
Size: 8mm

Moved
Moved from Caddisflies.

more likely Chimarra
take a look at the palps - apataniid palps don't curl up on live material, and not much on dead either. They seem to be always reaching out and feeling for something. And the palp segment length's/shape are not right for apataniids. These look just like a philopotamid's. And the head warts look like a philopotamid's as well, but can't see them really well.

Interesting.
I know virtually nothing about Caddisflies so I went with the first all black one I saw without really looking at the structure of it. I'm not proud of that, but it was the last thing I posted after a long session of uploading insects so it got the short end of the stick.

I appreciate the caddis morphological primer :) and I'll have a better look around.

The palps were really cool, so that's why I took the shot in the first place.

edit: Chimarra looks about right. Thanks.
