Striped caterpillars - Homoeosoma electella

Striped caterpillars - Homoeosoma electella
Delaware County, Pennsylvania, USA
August 22, 2010
Size: up to 7mm
Looking at a Synchlora caterpillar on a black-eyed susan I noticed movement in the florets of the flower head. So I removed some florets and a small striped caterpillar emerged. Removing all the florets revealed three of these striped caterpillars. The largest one was about 7mm. I put them on a new black-eyed susan and after some time they again disappeared into the flower head.
