Bronzed Blister Beetle - Lytta polita

Bronzed Blister Beetle - Lytta polita
Wrightsville Beach, New Hanover County, North Carolina, USA
March 9, 2006
Size: 24 mm
Found at a light, captured, and posed. Size measured by photographing adjacent to a scale--it was really large (24 mm even with the head tucked down a bit). I resisted the temptation to make it deploy its chemical defenses. Appears to be Lytta polita based on regional checklist (1), etc. and illustration in Dillon (2) of Lytta aenea. See guide page for details.

Pyro*chroid bait!
I hope to harness their chemical defenses as bait for fire-co*lored beetles this summer. The males have to lick a blister beetle before a female will accept their advances.
