Trielis octomaculata? - Colpa alcione - male

Trielis octomaculata? - Colpa alcione - Male
Claremont, Los Angeles County, California, USA
August 7, 2010
This wasp was photographed at about 1:30 pm on California Buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum) at the Claremont Colleges' Robert J. Bernard Biological Field Station. I'm pretty confident that we don't have this wasp on our field station Invertebrate List, but I'm not sure what it is. I was wondering if it might be Trielis octomaculata -- it looks quite a bit like this photo. It doesn't, however, have the red color seen in that specimen, and I don't know how variable the color is.

Crioscolia alcione, male
The clavate antennae and coloration ID this one.

These are the first images of live males for the guide!

Thanks for the ID!
Thank you so much! Now that I have the ID, I do see that it looks like this pinned specimen. Our other photos of this species were of females, and I didn't appreciate how different the males look. I'm glad the photos are a useful contribution.

Happy to help
The males of Campsomeris, Trielis and Crioscolia are often much different in shape and color than females. In Scolia, males and females are about the same size and have similar coloration.
