spider - Parasteatoda tepidariorum
Springfield, Virginia, USA
May 9, 2004
There are lots of these under the overhangs around my house. They sit upside down on irregular webs, and I've even seen one snare a large Phidippus audax. Any help in identifying is appreciated.

American House Spider
Achaearanea tepidariorum. ( cobweb weaver ) Very common. I've tried to photograph these actual size on the negative but my lens keeps bumping into the web sending the spider scurrying. This is a nice lateral view. I have a ventral view that I will try to locate and submit.

Thanks!
I know what you mean about bumping into webs. It wasn't until recently, though, that I would even get close to these creatures. I've pretty much been an arachnophobic for years... but the more I photograph spiders, the better I feel around them.
