Pinching bug pupa - Lucanus capreolus - Male

Jim took this freshly formed male pupa out of its cocoon, and photographed it outdoors. They turn dark in contact with the light.
Note how it is nicely folded, important to fit in the cocoon; compare with these pupae of Lucanus cervus. For more about the life cycle of this species see here.

Excellent series!
We're getting a lot of life cycle records of insects on bugguide, which makes it more and more a valuable resouce.
