Syrphid Fly - Eristalinus aeneus - female

Syrphid Fly - Eristalinus aeneus - Female
Norris City, White County, Illinois, USA
March 15, 2006
Size: Approx. 1/2 inch
This insect imitated a bee, but resembled a fly somewhat. I have never seen anything like it.

Syrphid fly - Eristalinus
And one can say that it is indeed alien, because it is an introduced species in the USA, called Eristalinus aeneus! There is already another picture of this fly in bugguide, look at:

Re: Syrphid fly - Eristalinus
Ah, thanks ever so much! Actually, I'm totally colorblind and couldn't describe the colors of this insect. It does indeed look like the link you mentioned, except for the stripes behind the head. I wonder if the one I saw could be a different sex or just immature?

Different sex
Yes, that is indeed the case, the one you found is a female (eyes not touching on top of the head), and the link I mentioned shows the male, in which the eyes are clearly touching on top of the head!
But there is some variation in the stripes behind the head, I might add.
Greetings,
Gerard Pennards

Different Sex.
I thought that must be it. They looked too much alike to be different insects. Thanks! And to think.... I almost asked that bug to take me to it's leader!
