Acworth, Cobb County, Georgia, USA

Size: Several inches overall
We got this pic that we think might be a cranefly. Never noticed them around here before so we are not too sure.

Crane for sure
Hello Garrett,
it is a crane fly for sure, but I think it is very difficult to tell the species from a picture. An expert on these flies might have a clue, but I don't! :-(
Greetings,
Gerard Pennards

Tipula species
Hello Garrett, Gerard made the point about being tough to determine the species of this crane fly solely based on the image. My best guess would be a Tipula (Lunatipula) dorsimacula based on the pattern on the dorsal thorax and on the time of occurrence in March in your area. Sometime it would be helpful to include the body of the whole fly (wings, antennae, legs…) in the image to facilitate the identification process. Good shoot, more crane flies are getting ready to emerge as spring approaches. - Chen
