Predatory Wasp - Ampulex canaliculata

Predatory Wasp - Ampulex canaliculata
Hopkins Gap, Little North Mountain, Rockingham County, Virginia, USA
September 11, 2010
Size: ~15 mm
This wasp was hunting rapidly and erratically along a fallen log. It has large mandibles and an elongated pronotum that seem unusual.

Spectacular image!
Given that these wasps are always "on the go," this is an amazing shot. May I use this in my blog? Please contact me if so. Thank you. BugEric24ATyahooDOTcom.

what a weird sphecid... thanks, guys.
boy was i off!

Moved from ID Request.

Ampulex canaliculata
Likely looking for cockroaches in the log.

Some ants captured a cockroach (a nymph I think) right in the area where this wasp was hunting.

cool bethyloid of sorts, i would say
