Tangle-veined Fly - Hyrmophlaeba texana

Tangle-veined Fly - Hyrmophlaeba texana
South Tucson (Alvernon Way south of Ajo Way), Pima County, Arizona, USA
September 1, 2010
Thought this was a bee fly at first glance. I have many more images, of varying quality.

Taxonomy of this species
If one follows the latest published treatment (Bernardi 1977) the name for this fly is Hyrmophlaeba texana (Cockerell). Bernardi considered H. arizonensis a synonym. It is likely that Teskey, when he wrote the chapter on nemestrinids for MND, had not seen this paper. MND was years in preparation, and the nemestrinid chapter could well have been written before the later Bernardi papers were published.

Moved
Moved from Tangle-veined flies.

Views of the underside or face would help confirm.

This would be H. arizonensis if you consider that a separate species. It was described as a variety of H. texana. MND does not consider it a species. ITIS lists it as a full species.

Edit: I misread MND. Both consider it a full species.

Cool!
Thanks, John!
