I shot three of this species in an oak habitat, at the same time and in two nearby places. Fortunately, each butterfly had a different look, so photos were easy to separate. A few years ago, I noted that these sometimes feed with wings curved downward, something I don't see in Funereal Duskywings. (This posture in shown in the Mournful1 series,linked below.)

I also believe - but have yet to confirm - that only the Mournful perch with wings about 3/4 open. (This posture is shown in this series, second image.)

I post these in hopes that the images and narration aid others in separating Mournful from Funereal. The big deal here is the oak habitat - which may be a regional thing as we have only these two duskywings here - plus described postures.
