Grass Spiders (Agelenopsis)
I can't be sure of species, because I haven't studied all 13 possibilities, but it might be
Agelenopsis pennsylvanica
. They aren't dangerous.

Yes, it seemed safe, and quite curious, too. It saw me taking pictures when it was in the funnel and came running out to check me out. After a few closer shots in the light, he/she retreated quickly into the funnel...
This one had made its home within our Tomato plants
