You are absolutely correct! This is a male. Males are easily mistaken for Ammophila at first glance. Great image.

Thanks for confirming the genus, and noting the gender. I recalled your comment re. confusing male Podalonia with Ammophila, and this specimen looked more like Podalonia to me.

By the way, a bombyliid fly landed just about a foot from the wasp. I photographed the fly first, which soon took off, whereas the Podalonia scampered around the sandy ground for some time.
