Common and widespread
These big beetles are often seen on hot sunny days in wooded areas around recently cut
Pinus
logs and stumps. They are also quite "fond" of newly installed telephone poles, especially the ones that are still wet with tar/creosote. I have seen them in southern Maryland (on
P.echinata
and
P.taeda
), northeastern West Virginia (on
P.strobus
and
P.virginiana
), and in central Maine (on
P.resinosa
,
P.strobus
, and
P.sylvestris
). I think they are by far the most common species of
Chalcophora
in the Northeast US.
