Inverted-cone-shaped retreat in a web - Metepeira

Inverted-cone-shaped retreat in a web - Metepeira
Carpinteria Bluffs, Carpinteria, Santa Barbara County, California, USA
September 18, 2010
Size: ~2.5 cm
This cone-shaped trash-filled retreat thingy was located in the midst of an irregular web (~1 foot across for the whole web, ~1 in. across for the cone-shaped section). The web was built in the top of a coyote brush plant (Baccharis pilularis) in coastal sage scrub on a coastal bluff. I'm curious if this is specific to a particular kind of spider.

Thanks.

Update: I originally referred to the web in which the retreat was embedded as a cobweb. I've now realized that the web includes an orb web, and have added some images that show that part of the original wide shot. See discussion.

Looks
like a Metepeira retreat, and that is actually an orb weaver.

Ooh, neat.
I hadn't noticed before, but there is indeed a section of orb web visible in the wider shot from which I cropped this image of the retreat. I've linked the original wide shot, and a close-up of the orb web section, to this image.

Thanks for pointing me to Metepeira. What a fascinating genus!
