Voucher specimens from UGA helped confirm. A new species for BugGuide, Johnny. This species is in the communis-complex, along with a few other closely-related species.

Identified by voucher specimen.

This is a difficult group, and often genitilia are necessary. I hope to get some voucher specimens of Melanotus from UGA so I have reference material for comparison. Based on the pronotal punctures, I belive this is M. communis proper, but let's leave at the 'group' level for now.

Yes, enlarging the pics shows nice serrated tarsal claws, and Melanotus is one of a few genera with this feature. I have a key to the genus, if you have the specimen. Looks like something near communis-similis.
