Syrphid Fly - Spilomyia interrupta - female

Syrphid Fly - Spilomyia interrupta - Female
Stevens Creek County Park, Santa Clara County, California, USA
September 16, 2010
Size: ~10-12 mm
Found in a riparian habitat where yellow-jackets are abundant. Have not noted any interaction of this species with wasps, nor do I know anything about its life cycle. What is the role of the wasp-mimicking coloration? Some kind of defense? A means of parasitizing vespids?
