Starburst-shaped galls - Caryomyia asteris

Starburst-shaped galls - Caryomyia asteris
Athens/ Sandy Creek Park, Clarke County, Georgia, USA
August 7, 2010
Size: under 1 cm
On hickory... I didn't see anything similar in Charley Eiseman's book.

Moved
Moved from Hickory Gall Midges. Dr. Gagné just sent me his monograph on hickory gall midges, published in 2008, where this species is described for the first time.

Very neat!
Thanks for following up on this, Charley.

Moved
Moved from Gall Wasps.
Nothing like this is pictured in my book, but see the text on p. 389. This is probably an undescribed species of Caryomyia. No cynipids are known to make galls on hickory.
Beautiful galls!

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

Probably a Cynipid Wasp
Galls of this shape and color occur on some oaks from the Sierra Nevada in California. According to my field guide they are an unidentified cynipid.
