Size: about 5 mm
Caterpillar found on Sweetgum. I've seen a few of these, but all of the others have been older larvae.

On reflection...
... I think that in addition to being an earlier instar, this caterpillar also looks different because it has been parasitized. I've seen this same brownish coloration in many doomed larvae.
