Dainty Sulphur - Nathalis iole

Dainty Sulphur - Nathalis iole
South Sabula Park, Sabula, Jackson County, Iowa, USA
September 22, 2010
Size: ~2 cm including wings
Dozens of these small yellow butterflies were flitting above and alighting on the sparse vegetation of a very sandy shoreline of a bay of the Mississippi River. Very skittish of photographer, they flew with extremely "fluttery" and bouncing flight.

Moved
Moved from Butterflies (excluding skippers). Thanks to Iowa butterfly expert Harlan Ratcliff for this ID, who adds that this species is not common in Iowa, but is not rare nationwide and can be numerous where found.
