Is this a male velvet ant? I've seen other types but not this orange one.

This is a male of Odontophotopsis venusta. Usually this species is nocturnal, was it active during the day?

 
Yes.
Yes, it was visiting a row of sunflower plants and it was around 10:00 am.

looks right to me. Reminds me a bit of this one:



That is by no means an ID, however. I could be way off base, so wait to hear from someone who actually knows something about these critters. :)
