This is a pretty typical T. pruinosus from the Mid-West & eastern Plains.

Females of this species are best characterized and separated from similar species by the large bright white spots at the base of the abdomen. Although most members of the Genus "Tibicen" possess this trait, the spots seemingly reach their greatest development in T. tibicen/chloromerus and T. pruinosus.

There are several other characters often used to differentiate this species from linnei and canicularis - incl. characteristics of the black face mask, ventral black abdominal stripe, wing node position and wing shape. However, these characters are subject to variation and not always diagnostic.

In this case, there is some slight green interuption into the black mask (NOTE: this trait is subject to variation and not always diagnostic).

The eyes are also slate colored and typical of pruinosus.
(eye color: typically very dark in linnei and variable in canicularis).
