Shiny Digging Beetle - Geotrupes blackburnii

Shiny Digging Beetle - Geotrupes blackburnii
Great Falls Park, Montgomery County, Maryland, USA
September 23, 2010
Ran across this guy struggling on his back, which allowed me to get this belly shot before I helped it over. It took a couple steps before ending up on its back again - seems like an ungainly fellow! Shiny dark blue-green, at least on the underside.

It was large-ish - maybe 3/4"?

G. blackburnii...
not splendidus...

D'oh -
apparent brain fart on my part - thank you!

Geotrupes blackburnii
yup, confident after seeing second pic.

Great, thank you!
He WAS quite splendid! I was wishing my camera would pick up the colors better, but it was dusk and the flash seems to mess with shiny insect colors sometimes.
