Moved
Moved from Paraphrynus.

Now that we have two species from bugguide area,
These pix can be frassed. If you have written a comment here, perhaps you would like to re-write it on one of the images that are staying :-)

Harry Potter (GOF)
They used these in the Harry Potter (Goblet of Fire) movie, in a scene where "unforgivable curses" are being preformed for the class. Of course they were most likely CGI, but still! In the movie they were made quite large and detailed.

On borrowed time
Because these images were taken in Panama, these images are on borrowed time until we get some images from the US.

Whip scorpion
They act more like a nocturnal spider. They are fairly easy going, not in a big hury. I used to see many of them in the Arizona desert when I was working in the dirt at night, but haven't seen many of them lately with all the development going on. The long "feelers" are each typically about three inches in length and very sensitive. When touched, the feelers "whip" back. Don't know if that's how they got the name.

Whip Scorpion
I have been wondering for months what it was that I had seen several times in my garage in rural AZ. Now I know. Too bad I never had my camera handy when I spotted him/her. This thing looked like something I might expect to see in a sci-fi movie. Living under a rock out here in the desert, I never saw any of the Potter Movies. I guess I need to get a life!

My Own Photo!
I finally saw a tailless whip scorpion when I had my camera handy! July 26, 2006, Maricopa / Pima County line, AZ.

Update: I saw another one here on 9-2-06. Workers discovered it when they were digging up a tree that had fallen in a monsoon storm. They almost killed it, but at the last second it was rescued by the owner of the property -- thank goodness! I held it in my hand to show the workers it was harmless. It had lost a leg, but otherwise seemed to be OK. I hope with seven other legs, it survived.

Spotted, Tailless Whip Scorpion
Whilst not a bug fan, I thought it might be useful to post a sighting of this unusual 'spider-ish' character. It was exactly as shown in 'Su Rogers' pic posted previously. Black but had those amazingly long forelegs pointed more forward which gave it a 'way' more imposing appearance...spotted north Phoenix near Adobe Mtn, Jun 28, 2007.

Ahh, I wondered.
I was getting ready to submit pix from Ecuador!
