Adult fly emerging from pupal case - Rhopalomyia solidaginis - male

Adult fly emerging from pupal case - Rhopalomyia solidaginis - Male
Rancocas Nature Center NJAS, Burlington County, New Jersey, USA
October 1, 2010
Size: 3.5 and 4 mm
The emerging adult and two views of the pupa a few minutes earlier. They are all at the same scale to show the difference in size. The adult is longer and wider than the pupa. It must pump air to make itself larger; the abdomen looks somewhat translucent and I think that I see bubbles inside (but then that must be my imagination).
