P. cardinalis? - dorsal - Phidippus cardinalis - male

P. cardinalis? - dorsal - Phidippus cardinalis - Male
Austin, Travis County, Texas, USA
October 4, 2010
Size: 10mm
I'm pretty sure this is P. cardinalis. I was wavering because it's identical to several images under P. apacheanus, but now I'm thinking those images in P. apacheanus are incorrect.

We might want to revisit the P. apacheanus pages in light of these bits from Edwards 2004: (1) The P. apacheanus male abdomen has "scale cover yellow on entire dorsum. Venter gray." (2) P. apacheanus has bright green chelicerae.

Yes, good point about the chelicerae. GB writes about P. cardinalis on p. 65 that "males lack the bright green chelicerae seen in other mostly red species, e.g., P. apacheanus."

Is it mature? Looks like it might be. If so, why don't you sacrifice it to science and take a look at the pedipalp (but you'll need lots of light). It would be nice to have a sure answer to this.

Yes, it's mature. Why not sacrifice? I've got what may be a female, and I'd like to play.

I see. Then we'll just have to wait. :-)

Confirmed
I have confirmation from G.B. Edwards. P. cardinalis it is. I'll move it.
