Flat-Faced Longhorn Beetle - Synaphaeta guexi

Flat-Faced Longhorn Beetle - Synaphaeta guexi
Susanville Ranch Park, Susanville, Lassen County, California, USA
June 9, 2009
Size: Body length 15mm
I found this beautiful beetle along the Paiute Creek Trail within the Susanville Ranch Park - where the trail just begins to enter the canyon - elevation about 4200 feet. This is about 20 miles east of Westwood. The habitat was very mixed: riparian along the creek, open scrub-land mixed with juniper and scattered pine on the east side; and mixed conifer forest on the west side and into the canyon. This beetle was found on a bush of the rabbit-brush type.

It is the only beetle, and perhaps only insect species, out of hundreds that I have photographed, that has a 'pink' color within it's color patterns! A rare color for insects?

The image is extra large for detail viewing for those who are able.
