what bug please - Cucujus clavipes
Loudonville, Ashland County, Ohio, USA
October 12, 2010
Size: Maybe a half inch
About the surface the bug is situated on: It's NOT what it looks like ;-) It's the painted metal base of a candle holder sitting on my kitchen counter.

it just motivates me more to look for one!

looks like Cucujus clavipes
the Red Flat Bark Beetle

Thanks, Andrew . .
I rather like that Latin name. Now I've got to google it to see if it's a pest.

pest - only to fallen trees, and other insects
Least that's what I gather from the info page.
