Basilica Spider - Mecynogea lemniscata

Basilica Spider - Mecynogea lemniscata
Springfield, Virginia, USA
July 5, 2004
This spider looks like an orchard spider to me, but not any species I've seen before. There are plenty of venusta orchard spiders around my yard, and this spider doesn't resemble one. Nor does it really look like a mabel orchard spider, which I guess is the other common species around here. I found it clinging to a leaf of a potted plant on my patio, which is odd because I normally see orchard spiders sitting in the center of a web. Any help in identifying is appreciated.

And a great image of one. I'll move this to the Guide Page.

Thanks!
Thanks for the info, Troy!

Guide page updated
I just updated the guide page with all the info I could find.

I second that...
my compliments on a great spider image.
