Mating Meadowhawks? - Sympetrum obtrusum - male - female

Mating Meadowhawks? - Sympetrum obtrusum - Male Female
Sharon, Windsor County, Vermont, USA
August 8, 2003
Sorry it's not sharp, but I only got two shots before they flew away. The contrast helps a little. I thought the heads were clear enough to merit a look.

Sympetrum obtrusum
I'd be pretty confident with the whitefaced meadowhawk ID. I have heard the females disparigingly called "green faced meadowhawks" and this seems to hold true for this one. Most other Sympetrums would have a dinstincly dark (brownish or reddish) face when mature except for the Ruby (S rubicundulum).

We can almost convince ourselves
that we see a white face on the male and if so then Sympetrum obtrusum. It will be interesting to see what some of the other dragonfly folks here say.

I was thinking the same thing...
I just wasn't sure enough be the first to say so...
