White Spotted Stink Bug - Proxys punctulatus

White Spotted Stink Bug - Proxys punctulatus
Jupiter, Florida, USA
July 5, 2004
Shot in a dried wetland area. "Florida's Fabulous Insects" (1) has a picture of the same species. I need to snoop around and see if I can find a latin name. This is one of the neater looking Stinkbugs I've encountered.

Proxys punctulatus
This is proxys punctulatus.

Does Anyone know...
Has anyone seen this exact same bug but in a purple shade with an orange color at the base of its legs?

-Margie

Proxys sp.
I am absolutely positive of the genus, not sure which of the two species. White spot on tip of scutellum is a give-away combined with the otherwise dark color and prominent spines:-) Nice animal!

Thanks Eric!
Awesome, I think Patrick can rest knowing it's genus at least:)

Only 2 species in US...hmmm...I wonder how hard it would be to narrow it down?

wrote guide for genus
I jotted off a quick guide for the genus. A common name is "Black Stink Bug", and there are only two North American species.

possible genera
Slater, How to Know the True Bugs, p. 46, shows Podisus maculiventris, describes others, none quite a match, says six other species in south. A related genus is Alcaeorrhynchus, acc. to a web reference.

Hmm, Biologia Centrali-Americana has some similar spp. in genus Mormidea, some with spines, but other images I see on the web don't.

Actually, Mormidea looks close to your other stinkbug, I'll have to amend my comment.

So this doesn't narrow it down much. I had high hopes initially.
